The South’s Largest Golf Festival – Tasmania & Partner Cup

The Southern Golf Club Championship 2020, featuring over 650 golfers from 50 clubs, has become the largest and most attractive amateur golf festival in the country at the end of the year. The event is held in Ho Chi Minh City over two days, December 8th and 9th, at Tan Son Nhat Golf Course — a 36-hole international standard course stretching 6,800 yards with an average green speed of 9.2, offering a challenging yet suitable environment for amateur and semi-professional golfers alike.

Tournament Format and Structure

The championship begins with an individual competition played under the stroke play format with handicap scoring, divided into three categories based on skill level:

• Group A for golfers with handicaps from 0 to 12
• Group B for handicaps from 13 to 19
• Group C for handicaps from 20 to 28

Individual performance is ranked by net scores, subtracting each player’s handicap from their gross score over 18 holes. The top three finishers in each group earn individual honors and contribute to selecting the 12 best clubs to advance to the team competition.

The exciting team event takes place on the final day using the fourball match play format—popular in professional tournaments like the Ryder Cup. Each club selects its top three pairs to compete in their handicap groups. A match win earns 1 point, a tie gives 0.5 points, and the club with the highest total points wins the team championship.

If teams are tied, the winner is decided through a playoff of up to three holes on the 9C hole at Tan Son Nhat, the decisive hole for sudden-death. If still tied after playoffs, final rankings are based on individual net scores from the opening day.

Notable Participants and Prestigious Prizes

A highlight of this year’s tournament is the participation of former famous football player Le Cong Vinh, captain of Tasmania Golf Club. Known widely in the amateur golf community, Vinh achieved 13th place in the National Amateur Golf Championship with a low handicap of 5.8, and he is well-regarded for his iron play skills. He is considered one of the most prominent figures in Southern amateur golf.

The championship offers an exciting opportunity to win Hole In One (HIO) prizes totaling nearly 40 billion VND. Each par-3 hole at Tan Son Nhat is equipped with extraordinary prizes, including:

• 6 brand-new luxury cars sponsored by trusted partners, giving golfers a chance to drive away in style with a single perfect shot.
• High-end real estate prizes, including luxury apartments at NovaWorld Phan Thiet, a premier coastal resort complex with modern amenities and idyllic living spaces,
• Hill Villas Mui Ne, featuring upscale villas offering an exclusive seaside living experience,
• Alongside many other valuable prizes from the sponsors.

Moreover, the winning team’s prize includes a fully sponsored trip for golf and accommodation at Cap Wickham Golf Course in Australia—one of the top golf venues worldwide.

Fourball Match Play Excitement

In fourball, two team members play their own balls on each hole. The team’s score for the hole is the better score between the partners. Scores are reported as “up” for advantage and “holes to play” remaining, with the match ending once a team’s lead exceeds the remaining holes. Effective teamwork and strategy significantly impact the outcome, adding intensity to the team competition.

The Event’s Significant Role

The Southern Golf Club Championship 2025 is more than a sports event—it is a vibrant gathering that unites the southern amateur golf community. It offers an excellent opportunity for players to interact, learn, and improve skills in a professional yet friendly competitive atmosphere. With its large scale, well-organized format, and valuable rewards, this championship is expected to become one of Vietnam’s premier amateur golf tournaments. It effectively promotes golf in the region while supporting charitable goals for Central Vietnam.
